Notes
Friday Night is Music Night - Ken Bruce presents the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Richard Balcombe in a concert celebrating the Magic of the Musicals from the Kings Lynn Festival.

Now in its 65th year - the Kings Lynn Festival was founded in 1951 by Lady Fermoy to compliment the Festival of Britain celebrations taking place in London that year. Lady Ruth Fermoy was confidante and lady in waiting to Her Majesty Elizabeth the Queen Mother and the grandmother of Diana, Princess of Wales. Lady Fermoy herself was an accomplished concert pianist who had studied in Paris but whose musical career ended when she married. The very first Kings Lynn Festival included the likes of Benjamin Britten, Kathleen Ferrier, John Betjeman, Peter Pears, Peggy Ashcroft, Osbert Sitwell, Shura Cherkassky and Peter Ustinov.

Many great orchestras have visited the festival over the years- and Radio 2's long running orchestral show - Friday Night is Music Night - has been a regular visitor.

Tonight's show features hits from musical theatre with West End stars Ria Jones and Michael Dore - plus an appearance by the current Phantom of the Opera - Geromino Rauch.

The programme includes - songs by the greats of musical theatre - Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Boublil and Schoenberg, Bock and Harnick, Stephen Sondheim and Lerner and Loewe.
