- First all-black Hollywood musical since "Hallelujah" in 1929. First film assignment for director Vincente Minnelli. Film is based on the 1940 Broadway musical, and includes two original cast performers: Ethel Waters (Petunia) and Rex Ingram (Lucifer Junior). Only 3 of the original songs were retained.
