Harold Rome is not quite a familiar name to people nowadays. A talented composer who can serve as great as a lyricist. This is his signature work which feature a score with elements of Cowboy, Country, Classical Theatre and such and such. The production, however, suffer from certain degree of tensions between the crew. Choreographer-director Michael Kidd and comedienne Dolores Gray apparently did not like each other, and David Merrick was just too happy for the free gossip to stand aside with his hands folded. Anyway, from the CD we can always get some pleasure by listening to the marvelous score by Harold Rome. The vaudeville-like "Ladies" and "Respectibility", preachy "Ballad of the Gun" and sexy "I Know Your Kind" are some of my favorites. On the other hand, this CD is out-of-print, so...be sure you get one if you'd got the chance.
