Judy Garland appeared in a radio version of "A Star Is Born" in 1942, and tried unsuccessfully to interest MGM in the property. This was George Cukor's first musical. He had directed the first film version of the story "What Price Hollywood" (1932 non-musical) which starred Constance Bennett as a waitress who becomes a Hollywood star.
